Our intimate events are thougthtfully curated with every detail in mind so that Black women can have a safe and beautiful space to gather and discuss mental health.

Writing and art are powerful catalysts for creating joy and we’re tapping into that magic! We’re so excited to have Michaela of @nourish_____ joining us at the summit!

Michaela Ayers (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist, art historian, and organizational consultant transforms the art of storytelling and collage into immersive learning experiences. Through her studio Nourish, she equips leaders to grow cultures of creativity, connection, and care. She also hosts Black Her Stories, a podcast and community platform celebrating the ingenuity of Black women past and present.

As I rebuild, I’ve fallen in love with grounding myself outdoors. Trees, in particular, have taught me so much:

They grow slow.
They root deep.
They stand tall—even in seasons where nothing appears to be blooming.
They protect, they remember, and they hold stories.

During my visit to South Carolina, I stood under these trees and felt a stillness I didn’t even know I needed. I wanted to just lay there and be. That moment reminded me—trees are nature’s medicine.

Most recently, she has become a Certified Breastfeeding Counselor, specializing in helping Black moms and their little ones connect and find joy in breastfeeding. She is a Detroit native, married to her life-partner and husband, mother of 3 (about to be 4) beautiful children, and the middle sister of 5 amazing women. She believes in the power of love and light, creating change one conversation at a time.

Hey Sis ! Yesterday was my Birthday and I wanted to share a little bit about this journey.

God has a funny way of showing us who we truly are.

These photos were a divine mistake. I had planned to take 36th birthday pictures at Frederick Meijer Gardens, but it was cold, rainy, and packed with spring break families. So, I reached out to the photographer and asked if we could make something work at the Airbnb—and it turned out better than I ever imagined.

This 36th rotation around the sun has been one of the most vulnerable, raw, and challenging years of my life. As I step into this new chapter, I’ve been reflecting on the last one. These photos capture parts of that journey. (I love using all forms of art to tell stories.)

There were moments I had to talk to myself in the mirror—affirmations really do work. I found healing in grounding myself in nature and stillness. I had to rediscover who I am beyond being a mom, a wife, and a nonprofit leader.

This year has been about relearning my childhood passions (like coloring), reconnecting with what brought me joy in college, and finally leaning into the business and clinical licenses I worked so hard for.

I’m humbly looking forward to what this next year brings. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I love the version of me in these photos—authentic, raw, honest, and vulnerable.

Thank you, God, for seeing me.

Now that I have the time to soak it all in and the words to express how I feel—this moment was beautiful. This moment was created by trusting the process, trusting that we are always in the right place at the right time, and trusting God.

What started as a simple hair wash appointment transformed into a healing space that was deeply needed. The hair shop has always been sacred for Black women, and in that space, we held sacred conversations. We laughed, we shared, we healed.

To every woman who came out—thank you. Thank you for being open, for being honest, and for simply being you. Black women are powerful. Black women deserve spaces where they can just be. And we are creating that, together.

Hey Sis, Some days, the best thing you can do is nothing but feel.

No coping strategies. No positive affirmations. No forcing yourself to "fix" it.

Just letting the wave of emotions come and go — without judgment, without pressure.

It’s okay to not want to feel better.

It’s okay to sit in the mess.

It’s okay to just be.

You’re still worthy. You’re still enough.

I first shared this on my personal Facebook in 2018, and it still holds true. With time, I’ve come to understand that grief isn’t just about losing people—it’s also about letting go of dreams, identities, friendships, careers, and even versions of ourselves.

This past week, I’ve been feeling a little off, and my intuition brought me back to this. Maybe I needed the reminder. Maybe someone else does too.

Our very first event was at @goodcakes_andbakes in the middle of February, and I was so nervous that the snow would keep everyone away. But LOOK AT GOD! The place was packed with beautiful Black women, sharing, supporting, and showing up for each other.

🌸7 Years of The Sisters’ Couch 🌸 READ ⬇️

Wow… The Sisters’ Couch turned 7 years old this month and honestly, I don’t even have the words to fully express what this journey means to me.

I created this space out of necessity—before “wellness” was a trend, before mental health was widely discussed in our communities. I knew that Black women needed a safe space to openly talk about mental health and self-preservation. I built this for us. I built this for me.

These past seven years have been filled with doubts, so many no’s, self-funding, and stepping out of my comfort zone over and over again. But this year… I received my first big YES. And that yes came at the cost of saying no to so many other things.

This is my year of radically stepping into my boundaries and celebrating everything—big, small, and just-because moments.

To my community, my day-one supporters and every single woman who has poured into this space—THANK YOU. Because of you, we’ve:

✨ Hosted 20+ events with over 370 attendees in person
✨ Sold out 90% of our events
✨ Created a movement rooted in healing, sisterhood, and self-preservation

This is all God. This is only the beginning.

As 2024 comes to a close, let’s take a moment to honor the silent battles we’ve overcome. The ones too heavy to post, too private to share. The moments only God could carry us through.

These wins—though unseen—shape us at our core. They strengthen our character, remind us of our humanity, and show us that we are perfectly formed and perfectly enough.

So today, let’s celebrate those victories. The quiet resilience, the grace under pressure, and the courage to keep going. Because those wins matter most.

🌿 Where Have I Been? 🌿

Would you believe me if I told you that in this picture, I was on the brink of a mental breakdown—or should I say breakthrough? Behind the smiles and the beautiful setting, I was struggling to get out of bed, battling extreme depression and anxiety. In just five months, (after this event) I lost 16 pounds. If you look closely, you’ll notice my pants are rolled. All the warning signs were there. I was exhausted.

The truth? I couldn’t even fully soak in the beauty of this moment. I was ready for it to be over.

Months before this, my life started to shift in ways I couldn’t control. Health scares had me running from test to test. My family dynamics changed drastically. My husband unexpectedly needed knee surgery, which turned a planned two-week recovery into six weeks—and I was his caregiver. All of this, while being the Co-Executive Director of a nonprofit, a mom to a 4-year-old, and just trying to stay afloat.

I knew I was headed toward burnout, but when it hit, it took everything out of me.

So, how did I make it through—or rather, how am I still recovering? Here’s my truth:

✨ God – It’s all Him. Every step. Every breath.
✨ Church – My spiritual family carried me.
✨ Lexapro – Yep, I needed medication, and that’s okay.
✨ Therapy – LOTS of it.
✨ My family – Their love held me together.
✨ My husband – My rock, even while healing himself.
✨ My friends – They didn’t let me slip away.
✨ Getting honest – Facing how I got here was hard but necessary.
✨ Nature – There’s healing in the simple things.
✨ …and so much more.

Why am I sharing this?

Because as a woman who leads a mental health platform and holds space for Black women, I can’t afford to be anything but authentic. In my darkest moments, I searched for Black women being honest about their journeys with mental health medication. I craved the transparency of Christian women navigating similar struggles.

It was hard to find. And that’s why I promised myself that when I felt like I was stepping into the other side, I would share my journey.

I’m not fully there yet, but I see the light. And I want you to walk with me as I continue to heal, learn, and grow. 💚

Motherhood has been a journey and as we approach mothers day I want to share my grief story AGAIN. This story is one of the reasons we are hosting the "Let's Talk About Black Moms and Mental Health" Summit .

I cried tears of grief on my first mothers day . Not because I had lost my mom but because that day solidified all the things I had lost including myself. I felt guilty for having those feelings and beat myself up about it. Luckily my therapist got me together and told me to think about how hard it is to lose a loved one and how much harder it must be to lose yourself. When she reframed my experience I was able to sit with my feelings and let them flow.

Western culture is quick to highlight all the things you gain as a mother but we don't talk about the things we lose.

To my moms out there take the time to experience all the stages of grief .Talk to someone and know this is normal! We will be discussing this at the summit !

Overthinking often leads to more stress and more worry. Trust I know lol when we get in the pattern of overthinking, over researching, over questioning we put our brain in a loop that can sometimes be challenging to get out of. Try replacing the overthinking with trust. Trust in yourself. Trust in your gut. Trust that you will always make the best decision for you and accepting that the rest is out of your control (easier said than done 🥴). This takes practice but you will get it Sis!
